Response to Nabokov’s “What Makes Good Readers and Good Writers”

Nabokov states that a good reader should belong to a book club. He also states that a reader should identify himself with a hero/heroine, they should focus on the social-economic status, and they should prefer a story with action and dialogue to one that does not have those elements. To be a good reader he also states that you should have seen the book in a movie; you should be a budding author, have an imagination and have a great memory. There are a few things that I agree on in his lists, and some that I do not agree on. I agree completely with his view that it helps for the reader to identify him/herself with a hero/heroine and that it takes a great deal of imagination with some stories. This, in my opinion, allows the reader to see the story as a whole and not judge it on the basis of reality, because some stories require you to look past reality.

Yes, I consider myself to be a good reader, but it wasn't always this way. I used to hate reading with a passion. I thought it was the most boring thing on earth. My girlfriend made me pick up a book with action and dialogue. I immediately fell in love with reading and since have not been able to put books down. I even have taken up an interest in writing a novel. I have fine tuned my reading skills as time has passed and I consider myself to be a great reader.
